Wheelchair Ramps Are Built To Help People Get Around

by Lora Jones

Preparing a house to be handicapped accessible can be quite an undertaking for many people. Everything from creating usable bathrooms to adequate entryways that allow people with disabilities to be independent can add a lot of value to the life of someone who has difficulty moving around. One of the necessary components in transforming a home is building wheelchair ramps that someone who cannot walk can use to get in and out of the house. There are steps one usually follows to make the ramp is easy to use and structurally sound.

The first step in settling on the design one wants to use when they build a ramp is to figure out where they want to put it and how big it will be. A determining factor on placement is how much slope has to be built into the structure. Severe sloping could make it very hard for a person use the structure and still stay safe.

Once the design work is completed and one knows where they are putting the ramp, the next step for many people is finding out if they need a permit to do the construction. A quick call to the town or city permit department should settle that question fairly fast. One should be prepared for a visit from an inspector to make sure they are constructing things properly.

Once one has a permit in hand they can begin construction. They will need to gather up all the material they are going to use and place near the construction zone. All tools and cutting equipment should be kept nearby as well. An essential piece of equipment is a saw horses or a cutting table, since one will usually be cutting a lot of wood into measured pieces.

The slope is a major concern that should always be addressed to make the structure safe for the person who it is being built for. Generally speaking, a contractor will not want to go beyond a one inch rise for each foot of ramp. This provides a safe angle for most people to get their chairs up and down with little effort.

When a house only has a couple of steps on the stairs to gain entry, then the ramp might be able to be smaller and allow someone to get up quickly. The ramp will have to be built differently when there are many steps and it could take some effort for a person to wheel themselves up it. One may want to construct resting points where a person can stop and take a breath before they continue up or down the structure.

The width of the ramp should be at least 36 inches wide. That will be wide enough to handle almost any chair that is made. Hand rails should also be installed to help in case one starts to roll out of control. These handrails can help able bodied people walking on the structure when the flooring is wet or frozen.

Making a house handicap friendly can take a lot of effort. There are many things to consider that one might not have thought of before the debilitating situation occurred. Among the most useful structures for someone who cannot walk are wheelchair ramps to get one inside their home without help from others.
