Saving Money in the Current Economic Climate
Never before has money been quite so important. The global economy has seen better days and since the credit crunch a few years ago things haven't really improved. Yes, we're reported to be beginning to climb out of recession in this coming quarter but the recent budget still slashed growth predictions in half, cut out proposed fuel and beer tax rises and put a few measures in place to benefit homebuyers and lift the economy. There has also been considerable press in recent months surrounding energy bills in the home and especially with the current weather we're having these are no small cost to consider. For this reason it's become of paramount importance to many individuals to start counting the pennies and saving the pounds, we look at a few helpful ways to start doing so below.
Given the substantial press around our ever increasing energy bills in contrast with the massive profits being made and reported on quarterly by energy companies it's perhaps not surprising that heating is one of the first things we suggest looking at. It's a simple thing but one that an awful lot of people don't do; if you know you're going to have sustained periods of time when you are not in the house and have no need of the heating, switch it off. Heating timers are wonderful nowadays and have so many settings that you can schedule the central heating to resume just prior your return to the house, meaning you shouldn't notice a difference at all, apart from where it counts that is - in your bill!
No one likes to sit back, relax and indulge in a steaming hot bath more than myself. They do use significantly more water than our good friend the shower does though, disappointing to say the least! Dishwashers, washing machines, toilet flushes can all be used more sparingly (well not toilet flushes!) with advance planning too. Water is getting more and more expensive despite the fact that our skies appear to be giving us an abundance of the stuff. Even if you just switch off the tap whilst washing your teeth, this can save water - and bank balances - fairly quickly.
Apple really is a wonderful organization; their tech gadgets are second to none and as a company they are completely innovative and cutting edge with what they do. Their gadgets aren't best known for their long lasting battery power though and do require a lot of energy, so switch the iMac and other appliances off instead of on standby after use; it really can save significant amounts of energy.
Are you handy with a sewing needle? Do you fancy learning a new hobby? This suggestion may sound a bit old fashioned however not only can you mend you can redesign your entire wardrobe with just a simple needle and thread. Cropping your trousers, putting rips into old shirts and recycling old summer tops to put under winter ones and create a brand new look are all easy ideas that really work.
Next on the list we have light bulbs. This again is all about conserving energy and our bills, the retail industry is actually on hand to help here as there are a wealth of energy saving light bulbs for sale now that are much better for the environment and will save you money. This is more of a long-term idea but still a very valid one.
Something that is becoming a more and more popular investment with homeowners who are willing to invest money in order to give themselves long term savings are solar panels. These fit on the roof of your home and you receive money off your energy bill plus money through directly to you for any surplus energy the panels on your home have produced.
As the last point we have a little bit of nagging! There's no harm in getting on the phone to your energy provider and giving them other, cheaper deals you've seen around to see if they can match them in value. If they don't, don't be afraid to go elsewhere. It's your money after all.
